It is presumed that the payments to the Disconto-Gesellschaft of 1900.9.6 and £1458.15.0 referred to in the report on the liquidation of the Hong Kong branch of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank covered only debts actually due from the Hong Kong branch.

A copy of this letter and enclosures is being sent to the Board of Trade for communication, if no objection is seen, to the Controller in the winding-up of the Disconto-Gesellschaft, for his observations.

We have the honour to refer to the correspondence ending with our Commerce and Industry Department letter No. 23, dated the 7th March 1918, to His Majesty's Under Secretary of State for India and to forward a copy of a letter from the Government of Bengal No. 135-T.-Com., dated the 11th June 1918, with enclosures, relating to a request from the Direction der Disconto- Gesellschaft, London, to the Liquidator of Hostile firms, Bengal, for the remittance to them, out of the surplus assets of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank in Calcutta, of a sum of £21,719-15-1, being the balance due from the various branches of the Bank.

The roquest is not in accordance with the procedure suggested in paragraph 2 of the Colonial Office letter No. 35710, dated the 11th August 1916 (enclosure No. 7 to your predecessor's Rev. despatch No. 77, dated the 22ud Sep- tember 1916), by which the Calcutta, Hong Kong and Singapore branches of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank should pay off first their debts to one another and to the Disconto-Gesellschaft, in London and subsequently the debts due by other branches in proportion to their assets. In view, however, of the consider- ations put forward in the Local Government's letter, we are prepared to accede to the present proposal. We accordingly request that the amount in question be paid to the Disconto-Gesellschaft, London, from the funds held by the India Office to the credit of the Liquidator of Hostile firms, Bengal, it being
